MIS in Action- Assignment # 2

Q.1 Describe some RFID applications that might pose a threat to privacy. What information does RFID enable them to track?
-
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a type of automatic identification system.
-The purpose of an RFID system is to enable data to be transmitted by a portable device, called a tag, which is read by an RFID reader and processed according to the needs of a particular application. The data transmitted by the tag may provide identification or location information, or specifics about the product tagged, such as price, color, date of purchase, etc.
-RFID applications include tracking apparel and consumer packaged goods, tires, patients and personnel and currency and payment systems. In addition these systems enable business owners to have real-time access to inventory information. Tracking tags are also implanted beneath the skin of family pets.
Q2: How do these applications threaten personal privacy? How serious is this threat?
These applications threaten privacy in some cases such as attaching RFIDs in apparrel which would enable companies to know our cloth wearing preferences and the frequency of the different tytpe of clothes that we wear and in car tires or in other retail items where companies would be able to monitor the freshness etc of a product that would be classified under directly invading the consumer's privacy without his or her consent.
This threat is pretty serious because there are always abusers of technology out there and if there are no checks and balances in the use of this technology , we as human beings will have no sense of privacy at all.Whatever perception and sense of privacy that we have will be lost forever because we will constantly have the feeling that our lives are being monitored by people sitting in some control room and its a pretty scary feeling when you think about it.
Q3: Should these RFID applications be deployed? Why or why not? Justify your answers.
These applications threaten privacy in some cases such as attaching RFIDs in apparrel which would enable companies to know our cloth wearing preferences and the frequency of the different tytpe of clothes that we wear and in car tires or in other retail items where companies would be able to monitor the freshness etc of a product that would be classified under directly invading the consumer's privacy without his or her consent
However , this application can also be highly useful because if Governments start attaching RFIDs to currency it would greatly reduce cases of money laundering. Moreover this technology would be extremely beneficial in cars as it would if not eliminate, then drastically reduce car thefts and law enforcement agencies would be able to easily track down stolen cars. This would not only be beneficial in the developed world but also in a developing country like ours where car theft is an extremely big issue. Another very useful application of this technology would be to plant these cips in endangered animals which would enable researchers to keep track of them and this would greatly reduce poaching incidents which are a huge concern for every naturalist, biologist who is involved in protecting wildlife.
Overall after weighing the pros and cons i think that the use of RFIDs should be implemented but only in matters of security and areas where it could help save lives but implementing it in consumer retail goods is not a wise idea because ultimately it will lead to retailers abusing and misusing this technology in their efforts to obtain excessive information about consumers.

Places that i have visited.

This is completely different terrain. This was taken in Quetta in a Juniper forest way back in 2004 when it was safe to go to Quetta by road before the army operation in Balochistan started. I also got to see an Olive Forest in Ziarat during that trip.
This was taken when me and my friend were taking a walk through Ayubia National Park and we decided to hike on the mountain just for fun. This picture gives a clear idea of how far out we managed to hike.
This was Naraan three years ago. I went there with my family and it was truly a magical experience seeing those clouds at such a close range. It makes me sad to think that places like these in our country are no longer accessible because of the security issues and the ongoing army operation in our tribal areas.
This was Nathiagali while i was trekking 2 years ago.The total hiking time was 3 hours just to reach the top of the mountain. I took this picture while coming down , it was around 4 o clock and it was raining and the whole area was muddy. I remember i slipped 5 times while coming down.

Wish List

I'm not a football fan but this t shirt looks cool.
I would always welcome one of these on a hot summer day.
I certainly never would say no to one of these.

I was thinking of putting up a picture of a Ferrari or some luxurious car but then i thought , if somebody decides to get me a Diahatsu Terios Kid i'll be happy. =D
The Complete Magnetist II is the most luxurious and the most supportive shoe in our stability category and is designed for the moderate overpronator. These Swatch Irony Retrograde Chronograph Watches are among the latest in men's high-tech Swatch watches. The new Retrograde collection provides a mix of traditional and innovative chronograph features built around a new chrono movement and display.I last bought myself a watch when i was in grade 7 =P
I wouldn't mind one of these. The new top-of-the-line Apple notebook computer sports Intel's new Core Duo processor. The Core Duo features two cores. which means it is way cooler than the previous versions.

IBA Go Green Society

g
I joined the go green society and because i liked gardening and i'm an important part of it having already contributed a great deal in organizing one of the events labelled "Paint Plant Pots" in which i helped transport the pots to IBA, i donated all of the plants that were potted and coordinated with the IBA gardener to get the plants potted in the pots that the students had painted.
Although i regret not being part of the painting activity which was done by the students but i couldn't help it because i had 4 consecutive classes that day.Nevertheless it was extremely rewarding to see the level of enthusiasm students showed in painting the pots and the final result. The IBA corridor is looking much more beautiful because of those pots.
Another project which is in the pipeline which Inshallah i'll be arranging is a farm trip for the society members. Once the manager Zia Saeed gets the approval from the patron , we'll be arranging this event at a farm in in the Outskirts of Karachi to help the students 'connect with nature.'

The beauty i find in Plants

Apart from animals my second hobby is gardening. I love to spend my time caring for my plants. I have quite a large garden at home so i spend a lot of time in maintaining it. Although i do like planting fruit trees but my major interest is flowers mainly orchids. I got this hobby from my dad and currently i have around 400 orchids at home. The pictures that you see are some of my orchids that are blossoming.

My Pets

Ever since i was a child i have always loved animals , this , apart from gardening became the only hobby i pursued religiously. I have kept many pets including pigeons, geese, ducks, hens, tortoises, parrots and dogs. I took my hobby to the next level when i interned at a veterinary clinic in my summer holidays when i was 16 despite having never studied biology. I learned a lot from this experience which gave me the opportunity to observe various wild animals at close range like monkeys , Cheetah Cubs and snakes apart from the usual dogs and cats.
Right now i have two dogs at home Britney;a 5 year old Golden Labrador Retriever and Olga;a five month old German Shepherd Dog
